Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (ODMs) are disorders of the facial muscles. They often develop as a result of insufficient habitual nasal breathing or oral breathing. The muscles adapt to this problem, creating a disordered breathing pattern that also affects how one swallows, which can produce a myriad of problems. However, with orofacial therapy, we can help to treat the problems that result, including TMJ pain, tongue thrust, mouth breathing, open bite, improper swallowing, thumb sucking, etc.
When abnormal swallowing is present, then speech problems, jaw pain, sleeping disorders, incorrect posture, and cosmetic problems can develop. Correct swallowing depends on a proper relationship between muscles of the face, tongue, and throat. Orofacial therapy is a program used to correct the imbalance between the tongue and facial muscles used at rest and for swallowing.
